Installing Windows software under WINE

Asked by Giuseppino

I am attempting to install Corel office software. The version of WINE from the repository says I need administrator privileges to do so.

sudo -i

gives me root privileges but not administrator privileges. How do I obtain administrator privileges?

Please don't suggest Open Office. It has the functionality I need, but I don't think it is a good use of time to debug my spreadsheets a second time, as changes are required. Some of my spreadsheets are over a megabyte in size.

The best way to install Wine is probably just to install it using the Synaptic Package Manager or the Ubuntu Software Center.
If you prefer to use the terminal, you would use the command:
sudo apt-get install wine

If you prefer to run the latest beta version of Wine (beware, here (might) be bugs), check out http://www.winehq.org/download/deb

Also, to clarify: root and administrator is the same thing.

Ah, sorry. In that case, is the problem with the installation of Corel Office or running the installed program?

You might also find helpful advice on the following pages:

At this point, Wine crashes with a message saying adminstrator privileges are required to proceed further. I haven't been able to determine how to do this from the Wine menu under applications.

The administrator messages some Windows programs give can usually be solved by changing the version of Windows that Wine is behaving like (e.g. instead of Windows XP try Windows 2000) - I don't know if it works in this specific case though.

From the log, it isn't Wine that's crashing. I suggest trying in Windows 98 mode. That's the mode that I usually use to workaround those issues.

I had about given up on this one.

How can the version of Windoze WINE is to emulate be specified on the command line? Unless I am missing something, there isn't anything about this in the manual or man pages. I am unable to determine how to do this from the graphical WINE menu.

It cannot be changed purely through the command-line in a meaningful way. It is a potential registry entry. You can change the global configurations for Wine (hence, affecting all apps) through Wine Config (winecfg). In the first menu, you should see a multi-selection-box from where to choose the wine version. By creating, in that same area, application-specific configurations, you can configure each application to have its own set of DLL-rules, options, etc.

For now, you should try to open winecfg and change the global configurations, just to see if it works.

If you want, you can use the winetricks script to change the version.

I think I see your confusion, it appears the application is telling you to be sure you are administrator and you've mistakenly thought it's referring to your Ubuntu user, so you're attempting to run it as root using sudo. You should basically NEVER run wine as root (unless you're doing something extremely unusual). Remember that the Windows applications have no idea they are being launched in wine, so when they refer to the Administrator they mean a Windows account with Admin privileges. Your "fake" windows setup under wine is considered an administrator, even when running under your regular Ubuntu user account. Make sense? ;)

If the app will not install at all then there is another issue involved, again, using the root account (sudo -i) is NOT the solution to the apps' problem.

You can in fact change the wine Windows version from the command line, but first you'll need to install winetricks. (sudo apt-get install winetricks). Then you can run "winetricks win98" or "winetricks winxp", "winetricks vista", etc. Run winetricks alone to see it's full list of options.

Finally, I assume by "Corel Office" you're referring to what they officially call "Corel Wordperfect Office". What version is it? Normally it's a good idea to search on winehq.org for notes on your app, in this case the latest I saw was Wordperfect 10 which I believe is old, but you might want to search a bit more. Another option to look at is using Codeweaver's Crossover. This is a paid app but it makes working with Wine much simpler, I recommend it for those who use a lot of their supported apps, expecially for business. Here is their list of compatibility with Corel apps. http://tinyurl.com/25pjmwd They also offer a trial, so you could download it and test first. Note that they bundle their own version of wine so using their trial would not affect any other wine apps you have installed.

Can you help with this problem?
