Photoshop in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by Stuart Pownall

I have just been sent a dick copy of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I am looking to install photoshop on my PC and have two options, Photoshop 7 or Photoshop elements 8. A lot of questions regarding photoshop installs have already been answered by suggesting the use of 'wine' however, none of them mention Ubuntu 10.04.

My photoshop 7 is a mac version from my old imac and the elements 8 has not yet been purchased. Can I run the photoshop 7 for mac on Ubuntu 10.04? Can I run the elements 8 software through 'wine' on the Ubuntu 10.04?

Any help would be appreciated.

Wine is for running Windows software in Linux, so unfortunately you will not be able to run the Mac version(s) in Ubuntu.

As for Photoshop and Elements (for Windows), please check the appropriate AppDB pages for support in Wine:
Photoshop 7: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1336
Elements 8: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18372 (doesn't work)
Elements 7: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=15722 (works)

Also, what is a "dick copy"?

Thanks for pointing that out. I meant to say Disk Copy. Is there a mac equivelant to 'Wine'?

I'm afraid there is no equivalent tool for running Mac OSX programs in Linux, though if you want to run old PowerPC programs for OS9 that should be possible using SheepShaver (http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/).

Do you know if your Photoshop license is for multi-platform? If it is, you should be able to download or request a Windows version of Photoshop that will run in Linux.

Could just use gimpshop, it's gimp but with rearranged menus to accommodate Photoshop users.

Can you help with this problem?
