wicd error message

Asked by David Hogan

I'm having trouble starting up Ubuntu. I'm having to start in a special one off mode and everything is fine then for that once only startup but I get the error message|: "The wicd daemon has shut down. The UI will not function properly until it is restarted". Any ideas how I can restart this UI thing (whatever that may be)? I'm running 11.04.

Open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, or search from the unity launcher.

Now, cut and paste this command

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart

then see what happens. Wicd should be starting on boot, but if it encounters a problem, the backend process "the daemon" will shut down. The GUI talks to this daemon to do all the heavy lifting. If it is not launching properly, this may need some troubleshooting.

The terminal gives me the following: dave@dave-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart
[sudo] password for dave:
 * Restarting Network connection manager wicd [ OK ]
dave@dave-System-Product-Name:~$

odd -- its saying thebackground daemon is running. Does wicd now function correctly?

You may need to restart the wicd GUI with the command "wicd-client"

I followed your instruction and everything seemed to be normal. I turned off the computer and when I came back toit and switched on the trouble started. It booted up OK but before it got to the desktop dispay it came up with the message: "Out of range signal. Cannot display the video mode, change computer display input to 1920x1200@60Hz". I tried re-booting but nothing got past that message. I remember once getting a display at bootup once which gave six choices of booting up. The first one was normal bootup and the Fourth one was "Run in failsafe graphics mode". Using that 4th choice I was able to start up OK. How can I get at that during bootup? And should I alter the display input as the message suggests?

I managed to get back in again using the above method. I entered "wicd-client" and got the following answer: dave@dave-System-Product-Name:~$ wicd-client
Has notifications support True
rename failed
Loading...
Connecting to daemon...
Connected.
displaytray True
Done loading.

The cursor was still flashing on and off after waiting 10 minutes.

"The wicd daemon has shut down. The UI will not function properly until it is restarted". This is the message that I am still getting when I manage to start up.

I also get this message: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

How do I run nvidia-xconfig as root?

I'm also getting this message:Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages.

Please also include the line on which you entered the "sudo -i" command, as that message is indicative of a typographic error.

Sorry about that, Eliah, here's the full message (I hope): dave@dave-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo -i

That time, it seems that nvidia-xconfig ran successfully. (That WARNING message is not a problem.) When you reboot, are the Nvidia drivers working?

No. I'm still being asked to start in Failsafe Graphics mode with this error message: Sorry, I didn't pick up the error message. I'll try again.

It's no good I can't copy it. It is: Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure this yourself.

In nvidia Server settings I'm asked to restart the Xserver. When I try this I get the following: dave@dave-System-Product-Name:~$ nvidia-xconfig

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

In message #18 you tried to run nvidia-xconfig without administrator rights and it failed.

Try again with

sudo nvidia-xconfig

Hi Manfred, I tried your suggestion and got the message back that " New x configuration file had been written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. When I restarted the computer it was just the same, I have to start in reduced graphics and I get the same message that wicd daemon has shut down.

The problem appears to be solved. At startup I was getting the option to start in several modes. I have been choosing to start in low power mode. (How important it is to read carefully all these screen messages). Many thanks to all who helped me.
