wget with metalink support

Hi,
wget has built-in support for metalink. AFAIK, some distributions do enable it, while others may disable it when providing a binary package for a distinct distro/arch.
I haven't checked if wget on ubuntu has it disabled, but can you please provide reasoning on why or why not enable this feature for a distinct build?
Currently, in some group we're thinking about using 'metalink' downloads for some big data files, so this could be helpful for all the users in or relying on that group.
