Why don't you update Warzone?

Asked by Ernesto Manriquez

I can understand the release freeze for Maverick. But, why Natty isn't getting the last round of Warzone updates? They have released 2.3.6 in the stable branch, and there is an unstable branch, 3.0 beta 4 (main changes: massive retexturing and a new terrain engine) Fedora simply follows your cadence. So, is there a reason? A fundamental breakage? Something?

Most likely, Warzone 2100 in Ubuntu has not been updated because nobody has gotten around to it. There might not be enough developers working on packaging it for Ubuntu. The last update (and this is in Natty) was 16 weeks ago.

If you believe that a newer version of Warzone 2100 should be packaged for Natty, then I recommend filing a bug report / feature request against the package warzone2100 in Ubuntu. Then the developers (by which I mean the people who package Warzone for Ubuntu and apply the Ubuntu-specific patches to it, not the upstream developers) can consider your arguments. To do this, first read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully, and follow those instructions. Your bug should contain an explanation for why you believe a newer version should be packaged in Natty. You have already presented some strong reasons; in addition, you might want to refer to the release notes for the versions that have come out since the currently packaged version:

http://forums.wz2100.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6538 (2.3.5)
http://forums.wz2100.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7141 (2.3.6)
http://forums.wz2100.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7394 (2.3.7)

Arguably, the bug fixes in these releases (there are quite a few stability fixes in 2.3.6) ought to be backported to Maverick.

If you are going to argue that Warzone 2100 version 3 should be packaged for Natty, then you should look at its release timeline and see if it coincides with Natty's development timeline. I haven't checked, but it's possible that it's not intended to be released in a stable version until Natty's final feature freeze.

Once you have submitted your bug, you can link to it from this question by using the "Link existing bug" link in this question. That will make a link to the bug appear prominently on this question page, and will also make a link to this question page appear in the bug, under the lists of subscribers and notified parties. This is a good thing to do. However, your bug should be self-contained--it should not be necessary for the developers to come to this question, in order to be presented with your full reasoning for why you believe Warzone 2100 should be updated.

Please note, also, that the latest version 2 series release of Warzone (version 2.7) is available already in Ubuntu through PPA's provided by MarcusLS. In 10.10 Maverick, the https://launchpad.net/~marcusls/+archive/maverick PPA should be used; in 10.04 Lucid, the https://launchpad.net/~marcusls/+archive/lucid PPA should be used. Those pages provide additional information and instructions for adding that PPA as a software source in your Ubuntu system, so that Warzone 2100 will be automatically updated to the latest version. Please note that, like most PPA's, this PPA is untrusted, which means that the Ubuntu project cannot vouch for it.

While I recommend using that PPA, you could also run Warzone 2100 version 2.7 (or any previous version) by downloading the source and building and installing it manually. This appears to be the only way to get version 3 running; I don't think there are any PPA's for that. If you wish to build from source and need assistance, please feel free to open a question about that.

Hello,
I just posted a bug report for the version 2.3.9
I'd like to know how I could do this update by myself ? Where can I find documentation please ?

Furthermore, the cinematics are in another download, but I think they are really importants for game experience. Would it be possible to create a suggested package ? I think it's another whishlist but while it's my first contribution, I would like to do it step by step !

@Thomas JAMIN
Thank you for your desire to help and, assuming you do update the packaged version of warzone2100, thank you also for your contribution!

Since warzone2100 in Ubuntu comes from warzone2100 in Debian, this should be fixed in Debian. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/warzone2100/+bug/886492/comments/2 in bug 886492. Then the newer version can be included in the next version of Ubuntu, and then it can be included in previous Ubuntu releases as a backport. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for details.

Thus, you should ask in a Debian forum how to update it for Debian. Before doing this, you should search through the resources at http://www.debian.org/ (especially http://www.debian.org/doc/) to see if the question is already answered; I expect that it is. The answer might be in http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/ and/or http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/.

(By the way, in the future, please avoid posting with the "Add Information Request" button unless you are requesting information **from the original poster of the question** for the purpose of working toward an answer to that person's question. In situations like this, "Just Add a Comment" is preferable. In this instance, there is no harm done, because a question's status will not change directly from Answered to Needs Information. But in other cases, this can result in the question taking on an incorrect status. See https://help.launchpad.net/Answers/AskingForHelp and https://help.launchpad.net/Answers/OfferingHelp for more information.)
