Permissions and vsftpd

Asked by Dennis

Hi,

I installed vsftpd, but it will not accept anonymous FTP connections. I receive the following error message from the Windows client:
500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable anonymous root
500 OOPS: child died
Connection closed by remote host.

I am able to ftp using my local account.

I tried changing group ownership to /home/ftp to ftp, but that didn't resolve the problem. I was unable to find a solution searching launch pad.

My goal is to allow external folks access to the server. I thought about creating accounts by individual, but I only want them to have read write to the FTP site and nothing else.

ANy assistance will be appreciated.

Dennis

Thanks for the reply. I went to the link you provided, but managed to get stuck at step 2. I couldn't find the vsftpd.conf.sample file. There are several other vsftpd.conf files on the system, but not sure which is best.

Thanks,

marcobra - thanks again for the assistance. The link you provided was helpful, but it didn't provide the level of detailed I was looking for. I found a HowTo that was very helpful. It helped me resolve my problems. You may want to reference this file as well the next time a newbie is stuck.
