Most probably the post-installation script was called with a wrong argument.
Can you follow the progress of the update?
If you tell me what you used to download the application I could tell you where to look for this.

I think this is the same as Bug #94759.

Yes,

this is also the same as bug #47538 (and bug #94759).
Apparently the installation script doesn't cope well with configuration files that have been left after a previous installation.
You should completely remove the old installation, and then try to reinstall the package.

To completely remove a previous installation:

1) use Menu->System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager
2) give your password
3) search for vmware-player
4) for all found modules with a green square on the left, mouse right click and mark for complete removal
5) click on Apply (from the toolbar)
6) exit

reinstall using your preferred method.

Hi,

I too, received this error while trying to install the vmware-player deb using Ubuntu Feisty.

I followed the above steps, and removed all the previously installed vmware packages, but I still get the error!

what is wrong???

this is my output, just in case something is actually different:

Starting VMware services:
   Virtual machine monitor done
   Virtual ethernet done
VMware Player is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the
following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.

invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing vmware-player (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 vmware-player
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
root@Robert-Ubuntu-linux:/home/robert#

Help would be much appreciated!
