vmpk--no menu bar

The menu bar for this program (visible in the screen shots at the vmpk website for all ports) is not present. I am new to Ubuntu, so forgive me if there is some special way of making this appear. I am thinking of the words File, Edit, View, etc. In windows these menu item are used to select a MIDI device.

are they not in the global menu at the very top of the screen?
