sav0_PPA: Some program not started after xubuntu 22.04 partial upgrade

Asked by Mattia Vianello

I apologize immediately for my English, I'm helping myself with the google translator.

I have been using this ppa for a long time https://launchpad.net/~savoury1/+archive/ubuntu/vlc3
After carrying out a partial upgrade of the Xubuntu 22.04 version, which was proposed to me by the system, some programs that I remember were present in the Sav0 ppa (VLC, kid3, Guvcview...) do not start and are no longer visible in the list xubuntu programs.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall vlc from the command line, but now the terminal indicates unsatisfied dependencies, here is the terminal output:

---
vianello@vianello:~$ sudo apt install vlc

Your question is related to a PPA.
There is no responsibility of Ubuntu or Canonical for the contents of a PPA.
You have to contact the provider of the PPA directly.

In your case please see https://launchpad.net/~savoury1

Remark:
The following command can help identifying the cause of your problem:

apt policy libavcodec58 vlc-plugin-base libavformat58

Thank you Manfred,
I sent a message as indicated in the link.
I hope I don't have to format as some of the programs need me, and uninstalling and reinstalling I can't solve.

I was convinced that I had opened a ticket like this regarding the ppa https://bugs.launchpad.net/savos/+bug/1974089 and direct subscriber Rob Savory but I must have done something wrong, as this is my first ticket and I apologize for that.

Hello, I'm not a specialist, but I have the same problem as you with the digikam and darktable applications. To solve the problem, I reverted to the previous version of FFmpeg by restoring my last backup with Timeshift. And now all is Ok.

Hi Claude,
First of all thank you all for the support.

Unfortunately I only have ISO backups, and no previous restore points, so I would have to reinstall the system anyway.
I also tried this command: - sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:savory1/* - but to no effect, returning the message invalid ppa.
I never thought that one or more ppas could cause me all these problems, since I won't be the only one using this ppa.

I still give myself a week of time, so as to make a backup of some PC configurations. I've already done that for important documents, but I'll check again. If I can't find solutions I will proceed with a format. I hope to save at least the home which is on a separate partition (basically a HDD dedicated to the home partition only)

Try the command

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:savory1/vlc3

I don't think removing the ppa is enough, I think you have to go back to the previous version of ffmpeg On my restore point it's just the version of ffmpeg that differs

I think you have to remove the ppa, then remove ffmpeg, do an update then reinstall ffmpeg from the classic repository

        sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:savory1/vlc3
        sudo apt-get autoremove --purge ffmpeg
        sudo apt-get update
        sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

Thanks Claude and Manfred,

I disabled the ppa
I have performed the given steps.
I see no way out at the moment

I translated the steps from the terminal, and I post them below

Note: This is a simulation only.
apt needs root privileges for normal execution.
Also, the locking mechanism is not activated and is therefore not
useful to give importance to all this for a real situation.

Claude,

unfortunately I find it difficult to install .xz packages (I didn't study programming, and everything I learned by testing and reading), I prefer deb files.

Hello,

Stepping in here due to this invalid bug report generating a lot of noise in a lot of email inboxes (including mine). Sincere apologies on behalf of the user of my PPA to the Ubuntu folk getting emails about this, for the noise that has been generated by this invalid bug report!

Firstly, as stated clearly by Manfred Hampl in reply #1 this should never have been reported as a bug for the official Ubuntu src:vlc package, as the VLC in question is in my PPA. Thus, it is absolutely nothing to do with official Ubuntu, and not at all the responsibility of Ubuntu or Canonical.

Secondly, there is an obvious spelling error in the command that has been suggested to remove my PPA from your system. The PPA does indeed still exist, and is indeed still reachable. However, the command to remove it should be as follows:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:savoury1/vlc3

Note the "u" in my surname, which is Savoury (not Savory). Running the above command will actually remove the PPA from your system. If you also have my FFmpeg 4 PPA (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4) added to your system (which it seems you probably do, given the issues with you upgrading to the latest FFmpeg builds that I published on 23/3/2023) then you will need to additionally do:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4

Finally, a very clear banner notice was added to the FFmpeg 4 PPA [*] on 23/3/2023 (when the latest builds were uploaded) stating that the PPA requires extra install steps to work, due it now being for direct supporters of my work only. Although I have also publicised this fact clearly in other places (ie. my Twitter and Mastadon feeds) it seems that almost no one actually goes and looks at what the creator of all these PPAs, being myself, ever says about them in various updates that are made quite public.

For the future, it is always best to go and read the information provided by any PPA creator (ie. at the main PPA information page) prior to reporting bugs and prior to contacting anyone about any such PPA. In any case, hopefully the above commands will help you resolve the issues with your system.

Regards,
Rob Savoury

Thank you Rob for stepping in.

I opened my ticket, believing I was doing things correctly and instead I was wrong, it didn't want to be against your excellent work that you have been doing for years.

I only install ppas that I trust, and yours certainly is.
I absolutely want to underline this.

I have limited basic linux experience compared to you, and I'm fine with *ubuntu systems. It's certainly not my intention to cause trouble.

Unfortunately with your suggestions (and thank you) I still could not solve completely.

I'll do a formatting next weekend. Formatting that I had always postponed and took the opportunity to resolve some settings (partitions too large for example) that I had set with the first installation.

As previously mentioned, I didn't want to cause you any trouble at all.

Regards,
Mattia Vianello
