just install vlc through :
sudo apt-get install vlc
it automatically installs all the supported codecs...you can then play rmvb files, without doing any other thing.

vlc doesn't play Real media format. Try using GNOME mplayer.

VLC dosen't support Real formats on any platforms according to its website:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

You may try smplayer. I'm loving it.

Can you help with this problem?
