main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called - using VLC 2.1.6 in Xubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

Asked by Alberto

Dear geeks,
my computer runs Xubuntu 14.04.2 LTS.
I installed VLC to play movies.
This morning I tried and watched a rented DVD and this is the output the log file gave:

Hello Mark,I read the page you suggested. As I'm a newbie to Linux and to VLC (and not much daring) I tried only the most rated (and the most simple) answer, so:
sudo apt-get install regionset

regionset /dev/sr1

First I set it to 1, then I set it back to 2 as I live in Italy.

After making these tests the output is:

user controlled changes resets available: 2

The movie is still not watchable...

My DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4082B and I suppose it's old as the whole machine was bought in 2003.

The DVD disc is 2002, Pal system obviously.

It's time to return the disc (it's for hire) so I might consider the case unsolved but closed.

Thanks and regards
Alberto

Hello Mark...
I live in Italy.
I tried and changed the region code to my sr1 (DVD) device to 1 (States) and I still could not watch the movie.
I changed once again back to 2 (Europe). I have 2 changes left.

The command allows values from 1 to 8. What is the right value? It should be zero but this is not allowed. Then? Should i set it to 8? Or what?

Following the output of regionset /dev/sr1 trappolone is my machine, jalopy...!)

alberto@trappolone:~$ regionset /dev/sr1
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
Current Region Code settings:
RPC Phase: II
type: SET
vendor resets available: 4
user controlled changes resets available: 2
drive plays discs from region(s): 2, mask=0xFD

Would you like to change the region setting of your drive? [y/n]:y
Enter the new region number for your drive [1..8]:

Many thanks and regards

See post #3.

There are several solutions mentioned there.

I suggest trying the other solutions now.....

I did as you suggested. I tried and installed Makemkv (Beta version) but it didn't even launch. It failed
By the way, this program has zero reviews, it must be very recent...
Removed everything, bin part and oss one.

To me the problem is solved, even if I'm not watching the movie. I don't mind as I watched it on the DVD player and everything worked properly.

Thanks for help and attention

Alberto
