VLC doesn't appear

Asked by MadhuSoodanan

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04LTS. Today VLC's icon didn't appear. Ubuntu Software Center says as Installed....but its icon is not the old one. (shows Software source's icon instead). When I searched .... A green tablet-like-icon appears. Used Synaptic...removed vlc (not complete removal) and installed. Not succcessful. Need I try apt-get -f install ?

I had verified the Installed version and the Latest version in Synaptic. But didn't find any difference.

I got the 3.13.0-29-generic yesterday. But the date shows Wed June 4. I have a problem with the time also. It doesn't show the correct time after each log-in.

Try:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install vlc; vlc

Does it run ok? Is there any output in the terminal?

Sorry for the delay....due to a severe hardware problem. Got it repaired an hour ago.

No progress in my VLC. But the 'time setting problem' is not recurring now.

If you rename

~/.config/vlc

Does it help?

Don't know how to rename it. In usr/share/applications the icon is of 'software sources'. Rename is not allowed there. I don't know where this /.config/ is. Need I make changes in sudo apt-get --reinstall install vlc; vlc ?

Nobody is born knowing either but there is this thing called the Internet where you can find out. ....

if you run:

mv ~/.config/vlc ~/.config/vlc_old

Then launch the application does it work?

I removed some Local items having the same name VLC and installed from reliable source. Now it is working well. Now vlc command brings out the original media player. Thanks Actionparsnip for your kind attempt.
