vlc not working after upgrade to 12.10...

vlc not working having upgraded to 12.10.
Installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras and it still doesnt work.
First hint of anything amiss was when presented with a box from author saying save and continue it seemed to stick and do nothing.
Tried different kinds of dvd still no show

it did work perfectly on one dvd but trying the others again it seemed to flicker between play and pause quickly so i stopped. I understood vlc plays all akinds of dvds encrypted and non??
