New instance created for each file

Hey,
     I am using VLC media player on my Ubuntu 11.10 and a certain feature/bug causes a lot of irritation.
     I have VLC playing a certain media file and when I open a new media file by double clicking it, VLC opens it in a new instance instead of the already existing instance. I am not sure if it is a feature or a bug so I am posting it as a question.
    Is there any workaround possible for now??

Yes there is an option in the settings to allow only one instance...use that
