VLC crashes when watching movie

Asked by Mr Frank

I use VLC 1.0.6 goldeneye and 9 times out of 10 when I am trying to watch a movie (avi file) vlc will crash, first the sound cuts out then I have maybe 5 -10 seconds of video left then that freezes along with my entire computer. I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have been trying to figure out if there is a pattern emerging from all of this, but so far I have been unable to do so also I am very new ubuntu user so please phrase answers using layman terms.

well that is not the answer I was hoping for, I originally started with 10.10 netbook edition but found it unworkable with my mindset so I installed 10.04 the Lucid Lynx and found it to be a perfect fit, it is 100% updated so there shouldn't be any issues there. When I used windows I would either update the software or reinstall it to solve most problems, Is that an option with ubuntu ?

Hello,

I am also using VLC with absolutely no problems. The version I am using is 1.1.4.

This may be your problem. Reinstall VLC from Ubuntu Software Center.

Allan :)
