VLC will not play video from dvd

trying to play video from a dvd, right click on video file, click open with, click VLC.
VLC opens but after 1 second video name disappears and VLC has nothing to play
the video file is on the playlist, but will not play

Did you install the DVD codec?

Perform these commands in Terminal:
sudo apt-get install vlc xine mplayer libdvdread3
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/install-css.sh
