Ubuntu 11.04 VLC continually crashing

Media applications continually crashing check logs and this is the only weird thing that comes up

API mismatch: the client has the version 270.41.03, but this kernel module has the version 270.30. Please make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.

OK now it's ready and supposedly stable, VLC still freezes my system

The current workaround consists in setting ALSA for audio output in VLC. Although there's a side effect, pausing will cause the sound to mute.
