Does sound work otherwise? Do you hear sound effects and/or get sound when you attempt to play audio files? Do you get sound when playing videos in programs other than VLC? Have you tested this with multiple video files? Have you tested this with multiple video files of different formats and/or encodings?

If audio works some of the time, just not with videos (or not with some videos), try installing the appropriate restricted-extras package for your Ubuntu flavor (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats). If that is not sufficient, enable the unofficial Medibuntu repository (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) and install the appropriate package for playing non-native media formats (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Playing%20Non-Native%20Media%20Formats).

Can you help with this problem?
