click System>Administration>software sources

ensure that multiverse is checked

on desktop, press CTL+ALT+T to get into terminal

type: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

enter your password when asked. it will not appear on the screen

Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
