How to install guest additions

Asked by Tony Middleton

I have become a little confused recently regarding how to install the guest additions. On Debian/Ubuntu systems I have always just used apt to install guest packages within the VM. However, a lot of the descriptions on the Internet on how to install the guest additions talk about using the guest additions .iso, even for Ubuntu systems.

Which is the correct approach?

Sorry, should have been clear. I'm talking about Ubuntu guests of various flavours.

The host is the system that is booted on the real hardware
The guest is the operating system which you are running inside virtualbox.

Once you do this you will have a mounted ISO. You can then run the install script. I suggest you do this in the terminal.

Have you not checked YouTube for guides on this?

Can you help with this problem?
