uninstall virtualbox

Asked by Gottfried Schittek

I got Ubuntu 11.10 and virtualbox4.1.10 installen in Ubuntu. Everything worked fine, until I installed the extension pack of virtualbox. The previously installed winXP and actually the whole vitual machine and any new machine does not work. I get the following message:

The virtual machine otto could not be opened.

The device helper structure version has changed.

If you have upgraded VirtualBox recently, please make sure you have terminated all VMs and upgraded any extension packs. If this error persists, try re-installing VirtualBox. (VERR_PDM_DEVHLPR3_VERSION_MISMATCH).

I uninstalled it through the software centre and installed it again, but that makes no difference at all. What must I do now?

What do I do now?

I had the same problem, you have installed a wrong extension pack. Uninstall it, and use the correct version ;)

Uninstalling an app then reinstalling it doesn't do much. You took the files off, then put them right back....

If you copy the installation drive image then delete the vbox config folder in home, you can then recreate the box but use the same drive. It may help

How to uninstall the extension pack:

Open the VirtualBox Manager -> Files -> Global Settings -> Additional -> Rightclick the extension pack -> delete/remove/whatever

For my part, I'd like to know how Gottfried installed them in the first place, I've got VBox 4.1.2 running Win7-64 on Unbuntu 11.10 and all the instructions I could find referred to adding the "Guest Additions". All you have to do is click on "Devices" at the top of the screen. Only no such button as "Devices" existed. Now Dominik is saying click on "Files --> etc. Only there's no such button in 4.1.2.

Hi all,
Vbox in Ubuntu is quite an old version. After different tries and errors, I went to synaptic package manager and deleted all old Vbox files. then I downloaded Vbox 4.1.12 and the extension pack 4.1.12 since the file is made for Debian, I just dubble clicked the file and Ubuntu software manager opened and suggested to install. Which I clickes as well. Then I double clicked the extension pack file and Vbox offered to include it. Then I installend WinXP in the box. Then I added the username thing and my USB- contacts are working.
Bill, if you magnify your window of the box, so that it fills the whole screen, then it shows you the files, etc. on the top. I had to figure that out as well. Andrew is quite right, by uninstalling you don't do anything. You really have to make sure, that your extension and your Vbox have the same version number.
WEll, I've learned a lot again. Thank's bros, it is really helpful, to have at least someone who answers the questions. sometimes that triggers new ideas and in the end: IT WORKS!
THanks a lot
Gottfried
