Ubuntu how to install windows in a virtual machine

Asked by penneyda

I've recently installed ubuntu 9.10 and I am now dual booting with windows xp. I would love to get some sort of vmware going to launch windows xp from within ubuntu. Wine works okay for my needs but it's not perfect and dual booting back to windows takes so much time.

Is there a way that I can run windows xp within ubuntu without having to do a fresh windows install? I've searched the forums/q&a/google but can't seem to find an exact answer. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Please install and use Virtualbox:

- virtualbox-ose (Open Source Edition) it is in Ubuntu repository

or

- virtualbox-puel Personal Use and Evaluation License ( you must download from http://www.virtualbox.org/ )

Then after install virtualbox and rebooting the Ubuntu you can create a virtual machine and install Windows on it.ù

If you are in issue with Virtualbox please ask any question here.

Here the already q&a question about virtualbox https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-ose

I've looked at virtualbox, but my question is can I access/run windows, that is already installed on my other parition, using VM from ubuntu "without" having to do a fresh install of windows?

No. Yuo can try to create an image of installed Windows and then convert it to Virtualbox.

I mean you can try to make an image of the installed and running copy of Windows (i have already done using vmware software to make the http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ coy of the physical running Windows) then convert it into a virtualbox pc image then run it in using Virtualbox.
