https://launchpad.net/~debfx/+archive/virtualbox

Add that PPA, You can then upgrade to 3.1

And another one... how long does it take for a package (virtualbox for example) to make it into the official repositories? and on what grounds? do you test it until is ready or its just a matter of time (lack of time to test it)?

thanks in advance

Awareness,
It depends on how much you trust the maintainer of that PPA. The safest way would be to download the source and compile yourself, or in this case you probably want to download the .deb directly from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

How long? There are lots of variables, and nothing can really pin it down to a specific time frame.

Best Regards,

They are usuaklly fine. I havbe not personally come across a malicious ppa maintainer or one which has caused issues. The Linux community (including Ubuntu) is very friendly and helpful rather than agressive and disruptive.

You can submit a bug stating what issues the newer version gives. Ubuntu concentrates more on what works rather than just getting the latest stuff as there is a 6 month cycle of package reviews so the default repos may not have all the latest stuff. You are at complete liberty to add extra repos to get what you need

@Williamts99
id say i dont trust any ppa maintainer, since i dont know them ^0^
I tried to install the .deb from virtualbox.org but it gave me some weird error.
I dont really remember, but i unninstalled the version from ubuntu's repos and tried again and still the same errors and i need my virtual boxes running, so i guess im gonna wait till ubuntu update the repos...

@actionparsnip, I trust them all in the beginning, but since ubuntu's popularity is growing, im more concern about some1 adding a ppa with malicious software... really... Im maybe too paranoid since i dont really know the ubuntu comunity that well
