Running Windows XP SP3 inside ubuntu 9.10 using Virtual Machine like VMWare

Asked by BK Singh

Hi Friends! Since I love Windows and Ubuntu both and running them as multi boot on my desktop PC, hence my questions are related with both of these Operating Systems running in synchronization with each other. Now I would like to ask whether can I run 32 bit Windows XP SP3 through virtual machine (e.g. VMWare etc.) inside 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 desktop amd64 (ubuntu pre-installed)? Are there any major compatibility issues in this when running various programs across platforms? Kindly provide a detailed overview on this aspect.

No problems with that at all. You will need a valid windows license and an install media but sure you can install a virtualbox as you wish. You will need to run:

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose

then logoff and on again. You will be good to go. Remember to install the guest additions to get a decent display, there are some addons for a really flaky direct3D interface so a bit of 3D will work but generally it sucks.
