XP in Ubuntu Jaunty cannot read audio CD

Asked by Bryan Mitchell

 VirtualBox and sound problem.
I am running XP in a virtual computer based on Ubuntu Jaunty and Sun Virtual Box 3.0.6. When XP starts up I hear the normal Windows sound.
The sound Host Driver is set to PulseAudio as recommended by Sun.
The Controller is set to ICH AC97.
My problem is that XP will not recognize an Audio CD but will recognize a data CD.
Any suggestions please?

It has been pointed out to me that others have this problem and there is a reference to it on the VirtualBox site; the link is www.virtualbox.de/ticket/3494.

This problem is for me a stepping stone to my vital problem. I need to run one Windows program only, namely IBM ViaVoice which is a dictation program.
Currently XP reports that my voice input is nil!
I have a windows machine solely for this purpose but was hoping that VirtualBox would enable me to do away with Windows entirely.
Thanks again for you help.

I will NOT ask you, why on earth you want to play an audio CD in a VirtualBox XP-environement instead of using Rythmbox in Ubuntu. <g>

Neither under guestXP nor under guestUbuntu audio CDs work for me.

You'll get the manual for VirtualDub here:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
but it doesn't mention audio CDs either (except in the burning section, where it says they are not supported)

Regarding ViaVoice:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=7215

From the rating it seems that the spanish version of ViaVoice Gold 98 runs without problems under wine.

wine itself can be found in the Synaptics.

I don't want to play CDs in XP. It was simply a step by which I hoped to solve my real problem which is to get the XP guest to accept voice input. I cannot find any reference to this on the VBox web site.
At the moment I keep an old XP machine simply for this purpose. The other alternative is to dual boot my new machine but means I have to buy a retail version of XP because Microsoft will not allow the transfer of XP from my old machine.
However thanks for your comments.
I will also look at the possibility of using wine.

XP may think you have an IDE/ATA CD-ROM drive and will try to use it's audio interface to play your audio CD (that funky cable that goes form your CD-ROM drive to your sound card). This is probably what's not working in VirtualBox. If you try to play the audio CD with something like VLC instead of Windose's built-in player, you may have better luck.

Thanks to all who have made suggestions. VLC could not recognize the DVD drive. Windows Media Player will play the video of the CD but not the sound. Wine runs the Via Voice program (with one or two error messages during setup). However once again the microphone input is not heard by the program so its back to square 1 and the Windows machine!
I am going to mark this item as "Problem solved" because I think that all the possible suggestions have been made.
