Virtual Machine on Linux 9.04

Asked by Ina de Beer

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu and would really appreciate it if someone can help me. I've loaded Linux 9.04 on my desktop but I need to run Windows Pro for a few applications/cd's and to convert my outlook mail to evolution. I understand that I must create a virtual machine? Can someone please help me step by step to do that? Thank you in advance

Usually it's better to look through one of the existing package managers before going out hunting around random internet sites. Of course hunting for random stuff around the internet is much less likely to get you a virus or other malware then it would in Windows but still its worth hunting around in the legitimate repositories of programs and things that have been tweaked to perfection for Ubuntu. Try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Use either search tool, my favourite is the search button rather than the quick search because it looks around the package descriptions as well as the titles which means i can be a lot more vague. Try searching for "virtual machine" you should find quite a few. The most popular one, standard to many different versions of linux is the "VirtualBox" but this may not be the bes one for what you want. I haven't played around with virtual machines yet so i just don't know but i imagine each one has it's perks ;) Oh, anything that is already installed has a green splodge beside it. To install something new just right-click and choose appropriately. If you are new to Ubuntu or haven't searched for updates in a while then it's worth clicking on the "Mark All Updates" - another reason why it's good to stay with a package manager is that it sorts all this sort of thing out for you - otherwise keeping up-to-date with updates for all the packages might become a bit tiresome. It is possible to add new repositories, many people add quite a few to sort out multimedia using this worksheet
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
(Just to give an idea of how easy it is, this adds quite a few good things :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ahh, now i've looked at the link i feel a bit stupid ;) Nicely done Aurevoir but i would still stick with the ones in the repositories for greater stability unless i wanted to chance something that has only just finished beta testing. Beta testing is fun and valuable for the community too of course ;) Beta's tend to be pretty stable and means you are running 'bleeding edge' stuff, which can be great :)

There are 2 versions of VirtualBox, neither of which are Beta versions.

1. the OSE version (open source edition),
2. the PUEL version (personal use and evaluation licence).

Both originated from Sun Microsystems. The OSE version does not have USB support whereas the PUEL version does. Hence, many users prefer the PUEL version from the address Aurevoir has given above.

To download, choose the 9.04 version appropriate to your computer architecture (i386 or AMD64).

You might also like to download the User Manual which you will find under Documentation.

Thank you to everyone that replied to my question. I've downloaded the virtual machine software at
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and installed it but I'm struggling to get it to work. Are there any other settings I need to change of something else I need to download?

I think the virtual machines software just give you a machine inside your OS to play with. No it's time to install an OS onto that virtual machine. As you can see though i don't know anything much about virtual machines. Hopefully Aurevoir will be around soon or Andre later.
Good luck and regards from

"I'm struggling to get it to work".

Could you elaborate please?

One item worth downloading is the manual for VirtualBox (available from the same site).

This URL may also be of help to you:

I am logging out for the night - back in the morning.

I went to Applications, Add/Remove - and I;ve marked everything that I need. The files downloaded from the internet but before I could install it, my computer freezed and I need to restart it. There after the installation option didn't came up again. Is there something I can do or somewhere I can retrieve everything I've downloaded and just install it, because it is more than 200 files that I've already downloaded and just need to install.

Thanks Aurevoir, I've downloaded everything and the virtual machine is
on my computer (Applications - System Tools - Sun VirtualBox). I need
to load Windows Pro on my virtual machine, but when I press "start" in
Sun Virtual Box - F12 - "c" for my CD/DVD - it give me this message :
FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted.
Can you please help me to load the Windows cd? Thank you

So, VirtualBox is installed, well done.

Here is a guide to the next step, installing Windows:

If you still think some of the packages you downloaded haven't installed properly then try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

It asks for your normal password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Then click on

Edit - Fix broken packages & then the "Apply" button

last step there i think is to try the "Mark all upgrades" button and then "Apply" again. Hopefully that should fix a few problems. Then just to install Windows! lol
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
