There are two packages available for Ubunto 8.10, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86): For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.

64-bit PC (AMD64): Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2).

If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 package instead.

Which file do you need???

It's packaged into a debian package ("*.deb") given that you're running an Debian-based distribution, so no need for anything else just unpack it using Ubuntu package installer or you can open a terminal and write

sudo dpkg -i filename.deb

PS: filename is either in its absolute path or if you're pointing to your download folder you can write directly your file name

try double clicking that file.deb that you got, normally it will show an installation wizard, click on "install package" button on the top right, this will trigger the installation of your application, when finishing close that window and start your application frm Applications => System Tools => vbox

It sounds like you already downloaded it and ran the file. Now just run Virtual Box from Applications > System Tools > Virtual Box.

If you didn't run the file you downloaded already please run it :-) This will install it after you hit "Install Package." Then you can run Virtual Box.

This is a great guide on how to set up and use VirtualBox once you've opened it:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/create-and-manage-virtual-machines-using-virtualbox.html
& http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/using_virtualbox_to_run_ubuntu

I think it will be a better guide than words can express here.

And here's a YouTube Video Guide:

I hope these help :-)

This may be better for your purposes anyway on YouTube:

And it's based on exactly what you're trying to do (I bet). But I'm just guessing here. ;-)

Hi,

I hope these instructions will help.

1. Open the terminal.
2. Type the command "uname -m" and press ENTER or RETURN.
3. If you see something like "x86_64" or "amd64", then download the AMD64 version from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads (currently the top link is Ubuntu 8.10, which is what you have). If you see something like "i686" or "i586" or "i486" or "i386", then you need to get the i386 version from the VirtualBox website.
4. Once you download the Ubuntu 8.10 version, you will end up with a .deb file. That is basically an installer for VirtualBox. Just doubleclick it to start the installation. A window should open up with a big "install" button.

You will have to find that yourself. We do not support pirated software. If you have a Windows Installation disk, you can use that and the key it provides and then install iTunes from it (or use Wine -- an application for Ubuntu/Linux as well that will allow you to use Windows apps. in Linux!).

I have an iPhone 3G as well. Is yours "jailbroken?" If so, there are
methods of at least syncing music. I myself use Google Sync to sync my
contacts and calendar over the air.

I hardly ever use iTunes for apps. I just use WiFi, via my phone, to
get the apps.

I do recommend opening a new question about the iPhone, though, and
what you want to do with it.

Okay, back to topic:

I don't assume itunes can be properly used via wine (but you can try). There are several linux applications witch can connect to your iphone (have a look at linuxappfinder.com), but if you want to use the itunes store (to buy something from apple), I think there's no help but to install itunes.

So how to do it? How to use itunes in linux? I think the best would be to have windows installed in parallel. There is commertial software (like itunes) witch just does not work in linux itself. This is not a linux problem. This is a problem of the vendors (and therefore I won't use such software).

But what is meant by virtualbox then? Virtualbox emulates a complete pc, i.e. with virtualbox you have a second computer in your real computer! So you can install windows in this virtualbox-computer and use it without the need no leave linux in your real computer. Strange, eh? But: As virtualbox is a simulated computer, you can't just install itunes in it. As in every computer, you need an operating system first, so you need to install windows on it. It's completely legal to install windows in this virtualbox-pc (I remember reading the vista EULA once), BUT you need a legal windows licence and a legal copy of a windows CD witch is not already used anywhere else. If you have this, just install windows on virtualbox and then itunes in windows in virtualbox, so at the end you can sit in front of your real linux pc, having a virtualbox-window open wherein you see M$-Windows wherein you see itunes.

As for your iPod on Linux...

You will need gtkPod to manage your iPod in Linux. You can also use Songbird, an application that even looks like iTunes, to manage your songs in Linux (without ever booting into Windows). I am linking you quite a few pages that may help.

ipod vs Ubuntu: The Struggle for Perfect Synchronization
(Comment: Great comparison of applications available!)
http://www.ubuntux.org/ipod-vs-ubuntu-the-struggle-for-perfect-synchronization

(Comment: A User's Post Like the Above complete with screenshots...)
http://mikesubuntu.blogspot.com/2007/08/ipod-vs-ubuntu-struggle-for-perfect.html

I do recommend Songbird from personal experience if you are used to the iTunes interface.
http://www.getsongbird.com/
Get the .deb installer directly here: http://www.getdeb.net/app/Songbird to try it out for yourself.

Also, make sure to get gtkPod to manage your iPod in Ubuntu/Linux:
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/07/how-to-use-gtkpod-to-manage-your-ipod-in-ubuntu/

This should help solve most of your problems and manage your iPod directly in Linux without the need to boot into Windows.

I hope this helps as usual.

I also agree, if this original question surrounding VirtualBox is solved (installed and working) or doesn't need to continue please mark it closed or discontinue the thread.

You can open a new question here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

I recommend opening a new question, with your new question in mind and a descriptive topic and linking (in the description) to this question:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-ose/+question/65723

This will help the Answers community solve your problems more. However, if everything is all solved you should be all set. But we'd be glad to help.

Best regards,

Craig
