Are photo shop, autocad and other windows software compatible with ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Daniel R. O'Connor

I have been trying to get my sister to swich over from windows to ubuntu linux 8.10. But she says that she did some research and found out that linux won't run photo shop. Is that true? If it is true is there any steps I can take to make photo shop compatible to linux?

Looks like it should work fine: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=17, using the Wine program (you can find it in applications - add/remove. Then just double-click on a photoshop .exe file to install it)

Unless she's a high-end graphics artist, she could also give Gimp a try, which works quite well if you give it a serious try.

So all I tell her is to go to applications, click on add or remove programs,
and she will find the wine program there. And her photo shop program will
work at 100% efficiency, as if it were running in windows.

I wouldn't bet on that (if you want 100%, it would be best to install
windows inside virtualbox).

Just for clarification, what version of photoshop is she using?

photoshop 6 and 7 runs perfectly under wine with no trouble at all, cs2 i am told runs well but i have not tried that one, find myself using gimp more now after forcing myself to use it

first, you install virtualbox from:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

then you start it, and install windows inside it

and then you have windows running inside ubuntu like this:

You must install Virtualbox then install Windows on a virtual machine created using the installes Virtualbox on Ubuntu, then you can start and use the virtual machine with Windows in it as a real pc, so you don't need to reinstall Virtualbox every time, you need simply to install software into the virtual Windows pc (i repeat you will have a real Windows pc but it is running in a virtual machine) .

Hope this helps

photoshop 7 runs just great using wine.

however photoshop cs 2 is difficult to handle.
the default image editor GIMP works fine once you get familiar with the equivalent tools in photoshop.

but there are worries with autocad.
i tried installing autocad 2004 and autocad 2006 using wine in ubuntu 9.04.
the installation simply aborted in case of autocad 2006 , and for autocad 2004 though it was installed the package refused to run.

currently i am trying out vbox to find a way to this problem but with no help.
autocad 2004 installs just fine in vbox windows xp sp2 , but again it just does not run !!!!
