Why is the Revert snapshot button greyed out?

If I take two snapshots, I see something like this:

- First snapshot
  - Second snapshot
    - Current State

It seems I can go from Current State to Second snapshot by zapping (discarding) Current State (and presumably I could go from Second snapshot to First snapshot by discarding the second snapshot) but this seems extremely limited.

Is the commercial version less restricted?

Yes, you can only revert to the most recent snapshot in both versions of Virtualbox. You can however save a copy of a virtual hard drive from your .Virtualbox/VDI/ folder and use it as the basis for a new machine.
