Hi,

Here is a nice guide that explains how to install Virtualbox in Ubuntu 8.10:

Thanks, but it is about vbox 2.0.6 and personal license. I need vbox-ose 2.1 (not 2.0) which is available in ubuntu 9.04.

I usually download the .deb package and install it manually. You can download it from here:

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

I tried adding the apt repository, but that caused me dependency problems and broken packages. The manually installed .deb just works.

After you download the .deb just double click on it and you'll get asked for your password to install it.

Sorry, I was unclear. It is from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads:

"The binaries in this section are all released under the VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL). By downloading, you agree to the terms and conditions of that license."

So in commercial development environment you cant using it. You need compile yourself Open Source Edition or download from place where somebody do it for you (eg ubuntu). In ubuntu 8.10 there is virtualbox-ose-2.0.4, but i have problem with brigde network, so i want try virtualbox-ose-2.1.0 which has improvment in this area.

When I enter on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-ose I saw there are binaries for virtualbox-ose-2.1.0 and I have question what is preferred way to install these binaries ?

Well, did you read this?

"6. What exactly do you mean by personal use and academic use in the Personal Use and Evaluation License?

Personal use is when you install the product on one or more PCs yourself and you make use of it (or even your friend, sister and grandmother). It doesn't matter whether you just use it for fun or run your multi-million euro business with it. Also, if you install it on your work PC at some large company, this is still personal use. However, if you are an administrator and want to deploy it to the 500 desktops in your company, this would no longer qualify as personal use..."

Maybe your case qualifies as "personal use" and can download the pre-built binaries.

If not, you can try downloading the .deb packages for Jaunty from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-ose and install them by hand, but you could break something. As an alternative, is there's a ppa repository, you can add that to your /etc/apt/sources.list and install from apt-get, but again you could break something.

hope this helps.
