Unable to boot Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 under VirtualBox

Asked by Grant Phillips-Sewell

VirtualBox installed on Ubuntu 8.04.1 (32bit edition) on AMD64 AthlonX2 laptop.

After installing Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 (32bit edition) into a virtual machine on VirtualBox, it fails to boot, giving the following error:

This kernel required the following features not present on the CPU:
0:6
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

Any thoughts?

Hello Grant

Please use the amd64 version of ubuntu which can be downloaded here:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso

which comes with the 64bit kernel

Hello Bhavani,

Why? The 32bit version of Ubuntu Desktop works fantastically. I have installed the same 32bit Server system natively on this laptop and it works well, but I wish to have it running in a virtual machine for the sake of convenience.

What does the above error actually mean? Given that the 32bit version of Server works natively, why should it not work on a virtual machine on the 32bit of Desktop?

I am have a similar problem, I loaded the 64 bit version on my EM64T processor box and got an error that it found a 686 processor only. I then installed the 32bit version and it would not boot. Is the 151942 bug fix the proper course of action.

Best Regards,
