print via virtual box

Asked by afrenz

host=Vista, guest=Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Can not get anything to print from LTS. Where's the best place to get advice?
How to install printer (HP Photosmart 7200)? Works on host but not on guest. (Can not make the connection via VBOX 4.1.12).

This is my first time on LPAD so pardon if this is inappropriate place to ask such a question. Tips?
Thanks, Art

OK, I installed new Vbox (4.1.14) and extensions.

Did not solve the issue. I assume I now have to install the printer. However, I am faced with questions I know not how to answer, such as:
ENTER URI?
or NETWORK PRINTER?
IPP?
AppSocket?
LPD/LPR Host or Printer?
Windows Printer via Samba?

Ubuntu normally does this kind of stuff automatically!

Can you give me some idea how to proceed or point mee to some docs?

Is the printer a USB printer?

Yes, it is a USB printer.

Then you will need the closed source virtualbox from the virtualbox site, not the OSE version. This will give native USB access.

See the following tutorial to get USB to work on the guest Ubuntu:
http://www.howtoforge.com/virtualbox-2-how-to-pass-through-usb-devices-to-guests-on-an-ubuntu-8.10-host

I know the tutorial shows Ubuntu as host + guest but all the buttons are in the same places, at least on Windows 7. Once Ubuntu detects the printer, it should install it automatically.

I recommend however, if you can connect the printer to your network, it will be easier because I have experienced a lot of problems with USB support on VirtualBox.

Peter,

Your suggest gave me a solution. I went to the tutorial and in it I found something about enabling the printer USB in VBox.

After I did that the printer started working. Simple solution but I had no idea. Guess I am still a rookie.

Thanks for your help!
