Virtual Box OSE NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)

Asked by Daire Conley

I have virtualization enabled in the bios and Virtual Box OSE installed. I set up a virtual session and clicked start and got this error code.

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root.

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
IMachine {662c175e-a69d-40b8-a77a-1d719d0ab062}

I tried the command "modprobe vboxdrv" in terminal as root and got this.

root@open-source-notebook:/home/daire#
root@open-source-notebook:/home/daire# Result Code:
Result: command not found
root@open-source-notebook:/home/daire# NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

Okay... I went into synaptic package manager and marked the whole thing for reinstall with the dkms package added for an install. Apparently I didn't have it installed. Then I started virtualbox ose and it s working.

Are you sure you ran "modprobe vboxdrv"? It looks like you meant to paste in "modprobe vboxdrv" but instead pasted in:

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
IMachine {662c175e-a69d-40b8-a77a-1d719d0ab062}

In Ubuntu, the last text that was *selected* is pasted by pressing the middle mouse button, and the last text explicitly copied to the clipboard is pasted with Edit > Paste, right click > Paste, or (in the Terminal) Ctrl+Shift+V.

First, check to make sure you have the virtualbox-ose-dkms package installed, by running this command:

apt-cache policy virtualbox-ose-dkms

If you don't have it, you can install it:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-dkms

(You may be prompted for your password while running that command; as you enter it, you won't see any placeholder characters like *, but that is not a problem, just key it in and press enter.)

Once you are sure you have that package installed, then it's time to run "modprobe vboxdrv" as root. Since you're running it as root, just running that command wouldn't be sufficient--you have to prepend it with "sudo " in order to run it as root. (See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo if you want an explanation for how this works.) So this is the command you need to run:

sudo modprobe vboxdrv

That will likely work, fixing your problem. If it does, you can mark this question as Solved. If it doesn't, please select all the text in the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here.

Sorry Daire Conley, I didn't see that you'd already solved this problem. My post can be disregarded (though it does explain what you would need to do in order to correctly follow those instructions, should it ever be necessary to use them in the future).

I had the same problem and followed your instructions (Eliah) but I still get the same error

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {515e8e8d-f932-4d8e-9f32-79a52aead882}

using Ubuntu 11.04. any ideas? Thanks

@micalith
Please start a new question about your problem (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-ose/+addquestion), so that its status can be tracked better (this problem is marked Solved, but your new question will go between Open, Needs Information, and Answered statuses as appropriate, notifying others who may be able to help of what is going on), and because you may be experiencing a different problem from the problem here (especially considering that the solution here did not work for you). You can post a link here to your new question and a link in your new question to this question, but your new question should be reasonably self-contained. Please go ahead and subscribe me to the new question as well.

In the new question, please provide all the information you have about the problem. Please include the full and exact text from the Terminal, which you can obtain by selecting all of it (Edit > Select All), copying it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and pasting it into your question.
