Installing Existing OS in VirtualBox

Asked by Andy Boydd

I need some help. I want to install my existing Windows 7 OS(on C: partition in Windows) into VirtualBox on Ubuntu 10.04 (on E: partition in Windows). Is there any way I can get this accomplished?

your message is quite mixed up.

1. how can you have windoze on both drive c and e?
2. if you already have windoze on c, why do you want to install virtual box and install it on e?
3. windoze will only run on c drive and no other drive

Ok, I have three partitions when I boot Windows (C: D: E:), I have Windows 7 installed on the C: drive and Ubuntu 10.04 on what would be the E: drive. I am running VirtualBox in Ubuntu and was wondering if there was any way to make, what would be the C: drive, a virtual machine in Ubuntu so I can still have all my documents and everything without having to restart my computer and booting to Windows

Your request is not clear.
A virtual machine is a new machine, so you can't reuse directly content of "C:" in Virtual Box.
You have to:
   1-create a virtual machine
2-install Windows Seven from CD (so you need legally to buy a license to Microsoft)
3-define a share folder in "C:" partition, to share file between Seven in "C:" and Seven in virtual machine.

all your documents are already available through ubuntu. just click on places and go to the drive that holds the documents you created in windoze.

Andy,

It is in fact possible to use a pre-existing install on a physical partition with VirtualBox, see http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#rawdisk

BUT, please see the big warning at the beginning, also I've never tried it.

Best of luck,
George

When Seven install itself, it record hardware configuration, preventing you to reuse installed partition on another hardware.
Even if you installed Seven on a Virtual Machine and you copy it, you will need to "repair" Seven installation, with Seven disk.

Can you help with this problem?
