How do I setup a "shared folder" on a linux machine that also has win xp in virtual box?

In the virtualbox config you can configure shared folders and they will be mountable as network drives.

Alternatively (and if the Ubuntu system is sharing with samba already) then you can use a bridged network connection and access the shares like another PC on the same LAN.
