virtualbox not ose edition usb issue

Asked by Chris Horrocks

Have Ubuntu 10.04. Logitech USB mouse. Latest Virtualbox (full USB-enabled version) Running Windows XP SP2.
VB starts up - Mouse freezes and doesnt work. Very annoying. Used to work many moons ago.

It freezes before Windows boots so its a VB problem. Also XP doesnt see an issue with Mouse drivers.

When I "move" mouse the usb symbol at bottom recognises movement because little green light over usb comes up with every movement. however pointer is still frozen.

Tried different usb ports. - different computers too! (Have since upgraded - same problem).

In users groups I am ticked etc under vboxusers group and lp.

Of course the Logitech USB Laser Mouse [3100] is enabled in VB settings.

MY CANON USB Printer works perfectly with VirtualBox !

Help!

Actually after careful thought (even though Im a Linux noobie) Windoze problem seems the only logical answer (even though doesnt work in Safe Mode either)

Any suggestions would be appreciated to help me fix this without reinstalling Windows on the VB drive.

OK OK. A bit from column A and B
Reinstalled XP - mouse didnt work thru installation but now does.... HOWEVER.. cant do much else. CANNOT use mouse outside VB. i see pointer 'crash' before other pointer comes up to use properly within VB

So cannot go to VB menus....

therefore cannot install vbox additions so as to share folders......

right ctrl does JACKshit

If I understand, now the mouse is stuck inside VB screen.
Check at bottom right that release button is "Right Button". It should be displayed (not sure of exact words, except in french!).
Check also the color of down key next to "Right button". Green when grabbed by VB.
Do you also have a USB keyboard ?

Yes have USB keyboard also.

It says Right Ctrl bottom right of VB.

But it doesnt do anything. Pointer cant escape VB so cant click on any menus of VB.

When VB starts up - mouse pointer freezes. only when windows is fully loaded do I get 'another' pointer to use but as i said resrtricted in VB.

Any assistance is much appreciated

sorry to clarify when I said right ctrl doesnt do anything - it only highlights the little mouse picture and the arrow and unhighlights it. So it recognises right-ctrl but doesnt help me at al with this issue

So I have the Host Key as Right-ctrl. (Have tried others).

What happens when u hit the host key is this: The frozen pointer appears (ill call the Linux pointer) but I can only use the VB pointer.

Hitting the host key again makes frozen Linux pointer disappear. When I exit VB the pointer where it froze becomes the working Linux pointer.

Sorry with all the posts but am just making it as clear as I can

New virtual disk new install. Pointer works inside VB but is invisible (changing look of pointer in windows doest help) and Host Key now doesnt work at all. frozen pointer is still shown.

THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!! I found at another site

There is a simple fix for this particular loss (and a related one with a USB
keyboard): do NOT let the VM aquire the mouse/keyboard USB port. It then
uses a virtualized kbd/mouse driver that runs using the services of the
Linux drivers - problem solved. This works especially well with the Guest
Additions installed.
