VNC: Authentication Failure

Asked by samratb

I'm using vino-server. Whenever I try to connect to my Linux box from a remote machine, it gives me the error:
"Authentication Failure: Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to XXXX?" where XXXX is my hostname.
I'm trying to resolve this problem using my ssh access to the machine, without success. The only way to fix this problem is to disable and then enable the remote desktop password from my desktop using the GNOME frontend.

I need a way to resolve this issue using the command line interface - anyone knows how to solve this problem?

What client are you using to connect to Vino? Are you sure they are both the same version of VNC, I know a newer server can wreak all kinds of havok on an older client which doesn't handle the newer encryption as well.

I've tried using Real VNC Personal Edition (v4.2) as well as Ultra VNC viewer (latest version). I can see the vino-server process running (ps -A) whenever the computer boots up, but I cant log on using VNC.

The only options that works is if I use the Remote Desktop option on System > Preferences toolbar and to turn my password off and then on. I would like to know, if there is anyway I can turn-on / configure the vino-server from the ssh prompt.
