vino-server repaint problems

Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit running vino-server. I can connect with no problems, but either I get a black screen, or I get the full desktop, but the desktop repaints very poorly, or not at all. (Connecting from Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit.)

Connecting at LAN speeds, so bandwidth is not an issue.

I've tried both the Remmina and xtightvncviewer with various color and qualitiy settings with the same results.

x11vnc seems to work very well.

Is this a known issue? Are there settings to tweak for the vino-server? Is there some logging for the vino-server somewhere?
