Yes, you can use VNC over SSH. You will need to port forward in the router to allow the traffic in but you can certainly get the desktop be seen (albeit VERY slowly) on your system. This should help:

The SSH tunnel is good because VNC has ZERO security. The SSH tunnel protects you as the data traverses the web.
