How do I get Remote Desktop to work over the Internet?

I want to support friends using Ubuntu for the first time by using the Remote Desktop feature. I can do this over a LAN at the moment. I now want to do it over the Internet so that I can support my sister some 500 miles away. I am using vinagre for the LAN based Remote Desktop.

first of all see if ur sister has ssh enabled, 2nd you can use putty i think to control from an ubuntu machine
