I'm using vinagre

I'd like to start each connection in a new window (instead of a new tab)
Also - is there a way to add an icon to the top tray (just like Remmina)? I used to use Remmina - but it constantly locks / freezes and has a few other annoying features

seems you need the -n option.

umm - been there, done that
If vinagre is already running - then running it a second time (with or without the -n option) gives ...
(vinagre:9376): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
...
If vinagre is running - and you select the option "Remote Connect" or select a connection from a bookmark - then it opens the new connection in another tab (again - whether you start vinagre from the command line with or without the -n option)
So - not sure what the -n option is for
