Are backups disabled by default?

Asked by Jeffrey Knight

I accidentally deleted some files I was working on, and wasn't too worried because I knew I could grab the swap file and :recover.

Much to my surprise, I had none.
I searched my entire file system and, sure enough, no vim backup files.

It wasn't until I added these to my vimrc did backups become enabled:
set backup
set writebackup

Are backups disabled by default?

(using XFS)

I can confirm this on feisty and gutsy, so we should assume yes. If this is something you think should be changed you can file a bug, and mark it wishlist.
Thanks,
