"Open With" menu won't show what I need - how can I control it or replace it?

Asked by My name

What is shown in the "open with" submenu of the right-click-on-the-image menu keeps changing & doesn't correspond to what other programs see as suitable programs for the file (which isn't consistent either). I suspect this is more a general linux problem than a Viewnior problem.

What I'd really like to do is add entries to the main part of the right-click-on-the-image menu that invoke scripts thus:

script-on-path_A.sh /path/to/this/image/filename.ext
script-on-path_B.sh /path/to/this/image/filename.ext

and comment out the "open with" submenu altogether, so that the menu remains static & has exactly what I want, in the order I want, and nothing else, and stays that way.

I downloaded the source, but I couldn't figure out where to make the changes. If somebody could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Second choice:
Failing that, could somebody tell me how to at least get Viewnior to recognize one script as belonging in the "open with" menu? And keep it from disappearing? Maybe a file I could chmod -w if I could ever get it right to begin with? I've been mucking with desktop files and lists and xdg-this-and-that commands for days now.

Thanks.

If you right click a file then select open with then select to remember the association I think it adds to the options in the right click menu in Gnome / Unity. Worth a try. You can always associate it with a different application to roll back.

This may still apply

Backup any files you edit before you edit them so you can roll back easily

Thanks, but those answers don't really address the problem.. I have no trouble getting a script or other executable on the menu, but it isn't stable. Anytime I open with something else it changes position at the least and often vanishes. I've given up on this. What I really want is to be able to edit the context menu anyway.

Can you help with this problem?
