Hi!
First of all, how do you know it doesn't detects the drive at boot? Ubuntu or the BIOS?
It may be a hardware problem.
So try with this command:

sudo lshw | less

And search for the drive (if you find it post some of the output).

Then in the terminal input this command:

$ sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt

You can also try with this devices instead of /dev/cdrom:
/dev/cdrw, /dev/dvd, /dev/dvdrw, /dev/scd0, /dev/sr0

"dmesg | less" will show the boot info, look also there if it was detected.

does it mount in other operation system on same computer?
probably dvd disk is spoild(?) or dvd drive is spoild.

And just a hint - if there's no disk (or disk is unreadable) in the DVD-drive GNOME doesn't show it as mounted. So you have to have a disk in the drive.

It looks like Linux found it.

Let me start again.
Try this command (with the CD on the tray):

sudo mount -vo loop /dev/sr0 /mnt

Then the CD contents should appear in the /mnt directory.
Post any output that command gives you.

Try this (you may have to install the lshw command with "sudo apt-get install lshw"):

sudo lshw| grep -C 10 cdrom

Also:

Are you sure your drive is defective? I think I may have the same problem as you. I know for a fact that my CD/DVD drive works fine in XP Pro, and it seems to work on a fresh restart of Ubuntu, but a few minutes into using my computer, it will suddenly unmount my CD drive and give me all the same error messages when I try to manually mount it.

not it was not the drive going bad i think that ubuntu does not have this drive include into the dvd to be supported.
