Linux setup problem on WD SATA Drive

Asked by Paul_Langdon

Hello,
I am trying to set up Ubuntu 8.04 LTS onto my new PC. The process goes smoothly until I get to the Prepare Partition stage when my Hard Drive does not appear.
System details: ASUS P5Q PRO Mother Board, ASUS P5Q Pro (Gb LAN 8-ch HD Audio Crossfire)
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q8200 Quad Core 4x2.33GH CPU,Western Digital Black Caviar 500GB SATA Hard Drive.WD5001AALS.
I am a total novice with Linux but I am guessing this might be a show stopper for me with the Hard Drive being the issue. Shame.
Any advice gratefully received.
Kind Regards,
Paul

I have the same exact hard drive and had no issues during the install phase of Ubuntu 8.04.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I will ask: are you sure it was not selectable using the drop down box on the top right menu?

How many other hard drives do you have on your P.C.? Or is it only the one?

Also, I checked on the compatibility list thread for 8.04 and it seems many people reported this model as supported (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=361236&page=42 for example). So, I'm just curious if something else may be causing the issue here.

Do you have the most current BIOS updates installed for your motherboard/system?

Kind regards,

Craig

Craig,
Thanks for reply. Ah sounds like it should work then.
I cannot recollect a drop down box - Ubuntu spends a while and then presents me with a Prepare partitions screen which has no drives in it to choose. I am using a guide to installing Ubuntu and this suggests I should see a Prepare disk space screen and select Guided - Use entire disk.I do not get this but seem to move straight through to prepare partitions.

Only using the one (new) drive.
Kind Regards,
Paul

Is the harddisk recognized when you enter the BIOS? Maybe the store didn't connect it properly, or SATA is disabled in the BIOS or something.

I believe he set up his own rig. As we think (;), the problem most
likely lies in the BIOS.

I would also confirm it's up-to-date before checking it's configuration.

Thanks for your help so far.
Cruncher asks a good question as when I first connected the Hard Drive I did manage to set it on a 'RAID' connector so it was not recognised in the BIOS let alone anything else. However I noticed this before I go to installing Ubuntu. Now it does appear in the BIOS.
I have updated the latest BIOS from ASUS: 2002-1048576 2009-03-13. I checked the standard settings for the BIOS on updating,
Still no joy I am afraid. I do not see the 'Prepare disk space' window on installation - rather I get 'Starting up Partitions' and then 'Prepare partitions' but with no device in the window.
I have run the disk checker and memory checker on Ubunto and all seems well.
TBH I have little idea on where to go next. This is where I am headed:
1) Look at the BIOS and make sure all looks OK but I am not sure I will be able to see any problem if it exists,
2) Try later versions of Ubuntu (8.10 and the beta version 9). In that order.
3) I will get a copy of Windows XP and will install this and see if works.
Kind Regards,
Paul

Hm, maybe we can manually prepare the drive. From the live-CD, please open a terminal (Applications->Accessoures->Terminal) and post the output of these commands here:
sudo fdisk -l
dmesg|grep sda

Then we can continue from there

Cruncher thanks. At the moment I do not need to take up your offer as I have manged to install Ubunto 8.10(64).
As to why 8.04 LTS and the hard drive issue, I did receive a suggestion that if I configured ny SATA drive as 'AHCI' all would be well. I assume this means the 8.04 kernel did not have the dirvers for IDE?
Please note I have not tested this.
Thanks for all the help on this - this bodes well for the future as I am sure I an going to need further help!
I must also thank the Novatech support man who when I explained my issue with the Hard Drive suggested the 'AHCI' solution. THis company seems excellent.
Kind Regards,
Paul

Apologies for the spelling and grammar. I think the sense is clear though.
