Network Drive Write Permissions

Asked by DonP

Using fstab to auto-mount a network drive in order to make it accessible to all Ubuntu applications seems to work just fine. However, I can write to the drive from Ubuntu ONLY if the file does not already exist. Trying to modify a file gives "Unexpected error: Not a directory" which seems meaningless to me. I need this drive to be 100% accessible at all times. What can I do to make it so? Thanks.

What's the line in /etc/fstab that auto mounts the drive?

It is:

//192.168.0.75/Volume_1 /home/user/MediaDrive cifs rw,mand,nosuid,nodev,iocharset=utf8,username=user,password=password 0 0

with user and password being the actual ones for the user. I've also tried other variations including no username or password at all.

Thanks.

Try adding the nounix option after cifs (MediaDrive cifs nounix,rw,...)

Adding nounix appears to have done the trick! Thanks!

I spoke too soon. Although I can save text files now, I cannot save other types. For example, Gimp gives the same error after editing and trying to save the changes to an image.

Are there more ideas about this issue? I've noticed that even with text files that I can now save, a while after saving the text editor gives an error that the file has changed outside of the edited even when it has not.

Sorry, a typo. I meant to say "outside of the editor"

This is a serious problem that causes much waste of time. When will it be fixed?

Does anyone even read these forums? I am still awaiting a solution to this on-going and quite serious issue. So far, nothing.
