CD/DVD Drive not reading/writing

I need to work out why the CD/DVD drive on my HP Probook 4710S will not read or write CD's. Is there a simple test to see whether I have a system failure or just need a new drive?

If the latter, is this an easy/cheap fix?

Does it detect in BIOS?
Can you boot an Ubuntu install CD in it?
Do you dual boot the system?

One obvious soltn, if you have many machines, you can check a good CD in another machine.

Then move that CD to your dell machine. If CD does not read, then the drive is bad .

CD's that play in other pc's / laptops do not read in this laptop. The drive goosed.
