To contine: but terminal will not accept root password to work as (root) .....but this system should by default see the Cdrom/DVD device all the time without having remount with each use,,, correct ??.. hurry penguin bones..tastes too salty..and hand crank on side of my monitor needs oiling....squeek squeek,,,crunch crunch...

ps : the box for >> Never prompt or start programs media insertion is (unchecked)

d. nelson (redtide-nelson) said : #3

ppss : the drive is a HP DVD writer / cd-writer combo ,,,and was used to install,, and during the install repository on the cdrom was used..light comes on when dvd is inserted..flickers and goes to stand bye....whew....

When you use su, you need the root password, which doesn't exist. You can get a root prompt with:

sudo -i

and use:

exit

to end the session. If you want to play a DVD open a media player like VLC and click File -> open disk.

SO CONCLUSiON DEAR Penguins is....what do i write at termimal to install cdrom that this new 12.04.1 did not put in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab...will it be permenate ,,,,or will i have to do this every time ????? A BUG MAYHAPS DEAR READERS ?? surely programers would never overlook cdrom ,...snicker....

If you want to play DVD movies or CD audio, you don't have to mount the disk, it is accessed raw.

If you are mounting a data cd, the you'll need something like:

sudo mkdir /media/cdrom0; sudo mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0

And it will mount. When you mount, if the device is not in fstab you need to specify the mount point, otherwise the OS has no idea where to mount to....reading the man page will show you this.
