ubuntu studio 12.04 unable to recognize 1 tb hd after updates

the new samsung 1tb internal hd was working fine in the last few weeks since i nstalled it. but suddenly when i rebooted today, the system no longer recognizes it. i checked the bios setup and the drive is not recognized at all. i did not reboot the system for about a week and i was using the hd to organize and archive my data files. can this be the result of a bug in the operating system?

If the BIOS doesn't recognise it then it is OS independent. If it's not in the BIOS then NO OS will see the device.

yes, so i reckoned later and rechecked the bios setup, restored it to default and at the start up after saving to default made adjustents. now the system recognizes the hdd.
