Defragmenting Ubuntu drive

Asked by peter.j

I have a 1TB drive with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed using up around 750 GB. After deleting about 500Gb of stuff I now want to install 12.04 on a new partition of 700 GB while keeping 10.04 fully functional on the first 300 GB. I understand that it is generally not necessary to defrag Ubuntu drives however having deleted two years of stuff would expect files to be scattered all over the disk. I would like to make sure that when I create the new partition to install 12.04 it doesn't effect the 10.04 installation.

Any suggestions on how to tackle this one?
Peter

Hi guys, thanks very much for your quick responses. I had a careful look at the references and I think I understand most of it but I was just not comfortable enough to risk my much beloved 10.04 environment (the best ever in my humble opinion). I have chickened out, bought another HDD to install 12.04 so that I can go back any time I like. Thanks again though. The good community response is a great contribution to the Ubuntu success. Regards... Peter
